this is a general sort of question. Does the Bluebird (le mans) have a security system and special key? Or any other Nissan, maybe?

I got two keys with mine and it looks like one of them has some sort of transmitter on it. However, it doesn't seem to do anything. Does anyone know how they work?

It may be keyless entry... Open it up, and see if it has a battery? If so, replace it and see if it works (Probably not but worth a crack).

My old Legnum had the same sort of system - as does my Legacy now (yes I'm sorry.. I crossed to the darkside). But neither have worked with fresh batteries.

Yes, sounds like a remote entry. Pretty sure one or two of my previous Nissans had the same thing

Opened it up (eventually, wasn't obvious how to do that) and sure enough, had a small battery in it. New battery did nothing to the car though.

Question now is, is there some sort of switch IN the car that switches the system off/on? Where would it be?

There is no mention of this in the owners manual that I have.

As above, I don't think its an alarm but just keyless entry. It will have a receiever/control unit somewhere in the car but couldn't tell you where sorry
